Description of the consortium

These are the members of the consortium:

MAHOU are a 100% Spanish family-owned company, with a history that goes back 125 years. Our team is composed over 2800 professionals.

MAHOU make 34.5% of the beer that is produced in Spain and have 45 national brands of beer and 76 product varieties, among which we would highlight the emblematic Mahou Cinco Estrellas, San Miguel Especial, Alhambra Reserva 1925 or Solan de Cabras. The leadership position in Spain drives Mahou forward to new markets: we produce more than 70% of the Spanish beer that is consumed worldwide and present in more than 70 countries.

Innovation and tradition go hand in hand in the company. Technology helps MAHOU to improve their efficiency to respond to consumers’ rising expectations, but this does not make overlook tradition. On the contrary, at Mahou San Miguel, state of the art is at the service of our defining essence: mastery of the beer-making craft.

Mahou San Miguel is a business project with a vision of long-term sustainability, based on good economic performance recorded year after year, in those obtained in environmental matters and derivatives social action we take.

The permanent pursuit of excellence includes undertake obligations and commitments. We understand that a company like ours cannot be limited to the production process and the fulfillment of their legal obligations.

We operate being respectful to our environment and ensuring a responsible and efficient management of natural resources. Our goal is to become the company with the lowest environmental footprint of food and beverage industry in 2020 and worked daily to minimize the environmental impact generated by our activity. 100% of the electrical energy consumed by our production comes from renewable sources. We have a Sustainable Mobility Plan, with which we have managed to save a million journeys and reduce our CO2 emissions by 47% Hl. We have adhered to the Water Mandate of the UN Global Compact committing ourselves to continuous improvement in water management. We have increased our waste recovery rate to 99.5%. We work in the eco-design of our products seeking efficiency and sustainability. We have launched a program of Life Cycle Analysis of our products and processes that investigates and evaluates the environmental impacts at all stages of production and distribution.

Aqualia is the third largest water management company in Europe, and is a key element of the FCC group, a worldwide provider of infrastructure and citizen services. The company offers tailored solutions to the environmental needs of public institutions and private agencies, covering the entire integral water cycle and integrating municipal, agricultural and industrial activities.

The organization is present in more than 1,100 municipalities in 22 countries and serves a population of over 22.5 million people worldwide: Spain, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, Algeria, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Kosovo, Tunisia, Qatar and India.

Aqualia’s organizational structure is oriented to the constant search for improved efficiency in production processes and resources optimization, using the latest technology and with a clear focus on the customer. It is for that reason that the Innovation and Technical Department is organised in four key areas – quality, sustainability, smart services and eco-efficiency – and it is currently developing over twenty international and national R&D projects.

Bioe Group is a multidisciplinary team from the University of Alcalá (UAH), in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. The nature of its research is mainly environmental biotechnology with a clear focus on microbial electrochemistry. Bioe’s research is fully devoted to merge microbial, electrochemical and engineering tools to restore polluted environments (water and soils) by exploring the fascinating world behind the microbial electrochemical technologies (MET). The research is split in two independent scientific environments that cover applications from nanotech-scale to cubic metre-scale.

The group was born in the Chemical Engineering headquarters at the University of Alcalá, an academic location with a large experience in running bioengineering and biotechnology projects focused on clean technologies. Besides, Bioe group belongs to IMDEA Water, an institution devoted to water research that provides outstanding analytical equipment together with facilities for testing pilot scale prototypes.

RECUPERACIONES TOLÓN, S.A. is a medium-sized company based on Alicante, Spain, founded in 1945. Its business core is recycling and manipulation of metal scrap, principally iron, steel, aluminium, copper, bronze and brass, lead and acid batteries, calamine and zamak, and other metals of industrial interest.

Thus, scrap material is collected at our facilities, then selected, treated and manipulated to obtain high quality raw material under a strictly control process. Lastly, the material is ready to be introduced again in the circular productive process (i.e. iron and steel industry, construction, chemistry, etc.).

Business strategy is mainly focused on reducing environmental impact, increase efficiency of the recovery process and provide both environmental and economic benefits for the local area from circular economy of industrial metals. We are actively focused on the reduction of our environmental impact (including CO2 emissions) through global health and risk prevention, strict process control and continuous improvement of procedures. In this sense, we collaborate with research centres/universities to study the feasibility of using recycled metals (aluminium, iron, copper) in processes for environmental protection, mainly industrial waste water treatment and metal removal/recovery from industrial streams. Moreover, relationship with our providers and customers is a key point for our service, so continuous efforts are made to assure maximum quality of the procedures through a management system of actions monitoring.
